ODU Wins CAA Opener, 72-64 Over Georgia State

ATLANTA, GA--Senior guard Brian Henderson scored 19 points, hitting threeOf six treys to help lead ODU to a 72-64 CAA victory over Georgia State SaturdayNight. The Monarchs are 4-4 overall, 1-0 in the CAA, ending a three-game losingStreak. In all four Monarchs scored in double figures. Gerald Lee scored 13,Brandon Johnson 12 and Jonathan Adams 10 to join Henderson.

The Panthers jumped out to a 24-16 lead with 7:46 left in the first half, but theMonarchs rallied and reeled off 15-4 run to take a 31-28 lead after a three-pointShot by Brian Henderson at the 4:06 mark. The Monarchs eventually pulled outTo a 43-32 halftime lead.

In the second half, ODU upped its lead to 15, 56-41 with 12:10 remaining afterA Darius James layup and free throw. Georgia State would rally and after a jumperBy Kevin Lott with 56 seconds left had cut the Monarch lead to five at 67-62.Brian Henderson hit four free throws down the stretch for the Monarchs.

The Monarchs shot .490 (24-49) from the floor and committed only nine turnovers.GSU shot .431(25-58) and committed 15 turnovers. The Panthers outreboundedODU 36-25. Freshman forward Frank Hassell, making his first start of the seasonLed with six rebounds for ODU, while Rashad Chase led with 10 for GSU.

Leonard Mendez led GSU with 16 points , followed by Justin Billingslea with 13.

ODU returns to action next Saturday when they host the Hawks of the UniversityOf Maryland-Eastern Shore.
