NORFOLK, Va. -- Senior guard T.J. Jordan (Portsmouth, Va.) managed to find to more places to put her name in the Old Dominion record books Saturday afternoon in the Lady Monarchs' 80-59 victory over Charlotte.
With a game-high 28 points, Jordan broke the ODU record for most points scored by a Lady Monarch at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. The previous record of 27 points was held by Max Nhassengo against Hofstra on Feb. 24, 2004.
Additionally with her six three-pointers made, she becomes the ODU recorder holder for three-pointers made in a career with 251 to date, surpassing Aubrey Eblin's (1995-1999) former mark of 250.
The Lady Monarchs move to 3-0 on the season, the first time since the 1998-99 season Old Dominion has won three straight games to open a season. Meanwhile, the 49ers are stilling looking for their first win, falling to 0-5 on the year.
Jordan was the lone Lady Monarch in double figures. Senior Megan Pym (Newfield, N.Y.) and junior Jazzmin Walters (Norfolk, Va.) posted nine points with Pym hauling in eight rebounds. Sophomore Jessica Canady (Williamsburg, Va.) added in eight.
Three different 49ers reached double figures in the loss. Shannon McCallum came off the bench for a team-high 14 points to set a new career mark. Danielle Burgin added in 13, while Sabrina Gregory had 11, needing eight more points to become the 15th 49er to score 1,000 career points.
Old Dominion led wire-to-wire. While the Lady Monarchs only led by one, 21-20, with 3:08 remaining in the first half, Old Dominion used the closing minutes to clamp down on defense and not allow Charlotte to score. Meanwhile on offense, the Lady Monarchs used an 8-0 run to take a 31-20 advantage in to the lockerroom.
Charlotte got no closer to the Old Dominion lead than seven points in half number two. Traci Ray hit a three to cut the 49er deficit to, 45-38, with 14:13 left in the game, but Walters and Jordan connected on back-to-back three's themselves to put Old Dominion ahead by double digits the rest of the way.
Old Dominion outrebounded Charlotte, 51-36, as junior Tiffany Green (Chesapeake, Va.) led all with nine boards.
The Old Dominion women's basketball team heads to Paradise next...the Paradise Jam that is. The Lady Monarchs will be apart of a three-game tournament in St. Thomas over Thanksgiving. Play opens up against Connecticut on Friday, Nov. 23. It will be the first meeting between the Lady Monarchs and Huskies since the 2002 Elite Eight match-up. On Saturday, Nov. 24, Old Dominion will square off against Stanford, the first time these two teams have faced each other since the thrilling over time national semifinal game in 1997. One more game will await the Lady Monarchs in St. Thomas against either Duke, Purdue, or Temple, on Sunday, Nov. 25.
