Horst Repeats As CAA Defender Of the Year, ODU plays VCU Friday Night

NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion University senior defender DavidHorst (Pine Grove, PA.) repeated as the Colonial Athletic Association's Men's Soccer Defender of the Year in voting by the league's head coaches. In all, sevenMonarchs earned Conference honors. Fellow teammates Trevor Banks (Madison, WI.), and A.J.Kulp (Ephrata, PA.) joined Horst on first team.

The second seeded Monarchs (11-6-2/8-2-1) who shared the regular season title with Drexel (11-4-3/8-2-1) open the CAA Championship semi-finals Friday against VCU (12-5-2/7-4) at 7:30 p.m.Top seed Drexel will take on Towson (11-7-1/7-4) at 5 p.m. The winners will meet in the championship match on Sunday at 1 p.m. All games will be at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. Admission pricesare $5 for adults and $3 for youth 12and under. College students are admitted free with college ID from CAA member institutions.

Horst is the second two-time CAA Defender of the Year and the first to win the award in back-to-back seasons. The senior anchored an ODU defense that allowed only13 goals in 19 matches and tied for the conference lead with 10 shutouts. ODU surrendered just five goals in 11 CAA matches with seven shutouts. Horst, who is athree-time All-CAA honoree, also contributed two assists.

Trevor Banks led ODU with six goals, three assists for 15 points, while A.J.Kulp led the team in assists with seven along with three goals. Senior defender YombyWilliam (Bafoussam,Cameroon) along with sophomore goalkeeper Evan Newton (Virginia Beach, Va.) were second team All-CAA selections, while junior forward AmbaneEmmanuel (Yaounde, Cameroon) was a third team pick. Freshmanforward T.J. Beaulieu (Apex, NC) was selected to the CAA All-Rookie squad. Newton led all CAA keepers with nine shutouts and one shared shutout. Emmanuel scored two goals, while William teamed withHorst and Newton to solidify ODU's defense.

Pat Healey of Towson, the CAA's leading scorer with eight goals, and nine assists for 25 total points was named the league's Player of the Year while C.J. Sapong of JMU was named Rookie of theYear and Drexel head coach Lew Meehl was the CAA's Coach of the Year.
