NORFOLK, Va. -- The Lady Monarchs dropped to 7-6-2 and 3-5-1 in the CAA Friday night with a 1-5 loss to the UNC Wilmington Seahawks (9-6-1, 5-4-0). Wilmington got five goals from five different scorers in the match, including three within six minutes of eachother in the second half. ODU scored in the 66th minute of play off the foot of senior Lisa McKenzie, for her fifth on the year. Senior Beth Messier fed her the ball from the goal line for her first of the season.
Old Dominion controlled the game for much of the first half, but allowed a late unassisted goal to Nicole Panek. The Seahawks would never relinquish the lead. Panek received the ball over top the defense and would dribble in, averting a defender and shooting past the diving keeper, Colby Owen, for the goal.
Down 0-1 at the half, the Lady Monarchs would pick up the tempo offensively, but leave themselves vulnerable in the back. Wilmington would take advantage on another clearout in the 53rd minute that would find a streaking forward. Jenna Evans reached the ball first and got by the defender for the shot and the game-winner.
ODU seemed to grab the momentum as they would respond just 13 minutes later. As they continued to push forward, Dani Hammer put the ball into the box on the left side of the net. As it rolled toward the goal line, Messier would make a diving stop to save it from going out, get up and slip it to McKenzie in the middle of the box. She easily found the back of the net and cut the lead back to one.
The momentum would shift back, however, just three minutes later as a foul was called just inside the top of the box, awarding UNCW a penalty kick. Jenny Cauble would take the shot and score.
The final two goals came 24 seconds apart from eachother as Dalton Carruthers would score unassisted and Tandy Banks would receive a pass from Cauble and Kelly Renkin for the fifth and final score.
Late in the game, the benches were cleared as 45 players would see time on the field. The game was near even statistically, with Wilmington taking 13 shots, eight on goal and ODU taking 14 shots, seven on goal. Wilmington had two corner kicks and ODU had one, while the Seahawks were called for seven fouls and ODU was called for nine.
McKenzie led both teams in shots, with six, and in shots on-goal, with four. Wilmington spread the shooting around, with nine players getting in on the action with at least one shot and only three players taking more than one shot.
ODU will now travel to Atlanta to face Georgia State on Sunday, October 26. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.
