NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Monarchs co-ed sailing team raced to its third top five performance of the weekend and its first win with a victory at The Webb Regatta in Newport News, Virginia. ODU won the regatta by 50 points, winning both A and B division with a combined score of 47 total points. Gillen Elder was the skipper in A division and Stephen Waters was at the helm in B division.
Elder sailed with freshman crew Kaitlyn Paulsen and never finished outside of the top two boats. In 16 completed races in A division, Elder and Paulsen won eight races and finished second in eight races. The 24 point regatt was good for first by 24 points ahead of Virginia Tech's A division boat.
In B division, Waters sailed to a regatta-low 23 points in 16 races with sophomore crew Jennifer Chazanow. The pair were nine points ahead of the second place boat in B division and never finished outside the top three. The pair won 11 races, finished second three times and third twice.
The team earned the victory with a combined score of 47 points. The second place Christopher Newport team came across with 97 total points. ODU's co-ed sailing team was receiving votes in the Sailing World College Rankings this week.
