FAIRFAX, VA-- Trevor Banks penalty shot with a little more than 13 minutes remaining lifted the Old Dominion University Monarchs (8-4-1 / 5-0) to a 2-1 victory over George Mason (5-6-1/2-3) Friday night. ODU remains undefeated in the CAA.
The Patriots drew first blood with 11 seconds left in the first half as Chris Chaves scored on an assist from Sean Kelley and a 1-0 halftime lead.
Five minutes into the second half, A.J. Kulp kick in his second goal of the season into the left side of the net past a diving Kelley. After being fouled in the box, Banksscored his team leading fourth goal on a penalty kick to give ODU the win. Kulp is second to Banks on the team with eight points.
Sophomore Evan Newton had four saves on the night, while George Mason'sSean Kelley had eight saves. ODU outshot the Patriots 15-11. The Monarchs return toaction on Sunday at Towson for a 2 p.m. contest.
