Charlottesville, Va. - Old Dominion's Alex Funkhouser and Matt King combined to go 3-0 during day one of the Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional Tennis Championships in Charlottesville, Va.
Funkhouser advanced to the round of 32 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Charlotte's Jeff Archer, and a come-from-behind victory over Rob Lowe of North Carolina State. Lowe dominated the first set winning 6-1, but Funkhouser rebounded to win the final two frames, 7-5 and 6-4.
Matt King battled Liberty's Chad Simpson for three sets before winning 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5) and moving on to the second round.
Sophomore Yakov Diskin won his opening round match over Morgan State's Mauricio Ortiz (6-0, 6-3), but he could not get past North Carolina's Sandeep Daiya, despite winning the opening set.
The tournament will continue tomorrow with play set to begin at 8 a.m.
