RICHMOND, Va. -- The Colonial Athletic Association announced that ODU freshman Kelsey Williams (Newport News, Va.) was named CAA Rookie of the Week today. The freshman scored two goals against No. 30 James Madison over the weekend. She is just the second player all season to score twice on the Dukes.
The two goals were the first of the young forward's career and they came at an incredibly opportune time for ODU. The first was the early game equalizer, coming in the 30th minute of play to tie the game at 1-1. She received a pass from Ashley Kukura in the box and ripped a shot into the back of the net for the goal. The game remained tied until the 71st minute when Williams would score the go-ahead goal unassisted.
The two goals were huge, giving ODU a lead with under 20 minutes to go against the Dukes, who had only lost one game all season. JMU would manage to win in the final minutes, but Williams' goals were just the 8th and 9th allowed all season. They were also the only two goals JMU keeper Stephanie Poucher had allowed this season.
Williams has played consistent minutes off the bench for Head Coach Joe Pereira this season as the first forward to spell the starters. She now has five points on the season.
The Lady Monarchs return to the field on Friday as they host George Mason with kick-off set for 7:00 pm.
