NORFOLK, Va. -- The No. 13/11 Old Dominion field hockey team won its seventh straight and posted its fifth consecutive shutout with a 2-0 victory over Drexel in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action at Foreman Field Sunday afternoon.

The win improves the Lady Monarchs to 8-5 overall and 5-0 in the CAA. The Dragons, who were receiving votes in this week's STX/NFHCA Coaches Poll, fell to .500 at 7-7 overall and 3-2 in league play.

Old Dominion scored both its goals in the latter part of the first half of action. Sophomore Kathleen Shea (Elizaville, N.Y.) scored what would be her second game-winner of the season in the 22nd minute of play. Her team-leading sixth goal came as the Lady Monarch came racing down the field along the right side of the field. In a series of passes, the ball got inside the circle drawing out Dragon netminder Collen McAndrew. Senior Shannon Mobley (Va. Beach, Va.) passed the ball to Shea at the left post for an open look at the cage.

Old Dominion's second goal came with one second left in the half. With the ball in Drexel territory, the Lady Monarchs got off several shot attempts in the closing minute. A Katie Ueberroth (Stevens, Pa.) shot was saved by Drexel netminder McAndrew, while her rebound came to Loran Hatch (Green Lane, Pa.) but her shot was deflected by Dragon defender Jennifer Bolger. Following the Drexel defensive save, Old Dominion brought the ball back into the circle where among the horde of Dragon defenders, Hatch found an opening into the back of the cage for the 2-0 ODU advantage.

Old Dominion outshot Drexel, 13-8, but the Dragon defense held the Lady Monarchs to just two shots in the second half. Both teams also totaled three penalty corners.

Junior Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) posted six saves to help preserve the shutout. McAndrews made five saves in goal for the Dragons.

The Old Dominion field hockey team will play in two non-conference games next weekend. The Lady Monarchs will travel to No. 2 Maryland on Friday, October 12th and return home to host No. 12/13 Duke on Sunday, October 14th.
