HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- ODU dropped to 5-3-2 and 1-2-1 in the CAA with a 0-1 loss to Hofstra (9-2-0, 3-1-0) on Sunday. The Lady Monarchs allowed the most shots and took the fewest on the season in the match but still hung in the contest with the third ranked team in the Northeast region (NSCAA/adidas).
The Lady Monarchs had their best chance in the first half, when junior Shavon Knight found herself all alone in the box and fired a shot toward the bottom left corner. The effort was denied by the Pride's keeper on a diving save.
The game-winner would come in the 60th minute of play on a header from senior forward Brooke DeRosa. She received a cross from Larkin Hargraves and headed in her seventh goal of the season.
It was the lone goal junior keeper Lauren Tupman would allow. She faced 26 shots, including 13 on-goal, and made 11 saves. It's the second time this season she's made double-digit saves in a game.
The Lady Monarchs struggled uncharacteristically on offense. The team came in averaging 15.2 shots per game and the Pride managed to hold ODU to just five shots on the game. It was the first time this season the Lady Monarchs did not shoot in the double-digits.
On the other side of the ball, ODU also had an uncharacteristic day on the field. Coming into the game, teams were only managing 9.3 shots against the stingy ODU defense. Hofstra took a season-high 26 shots on the Lady Monarchs. Also, it was just the third goal allowed in the second half all season for the ODU defense.
ODU will head back on the road next weekend to face VCU and James Madison on Friday and Sunday respectively. At the time of this release, both teams were undefeated in Colonial action. Friday night's game against the Rams will kick off at 7:00 pm.
