NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion Monarchs (4-4-1, 1-0-0) opened the Colonial Athletic Association season with a win Friday night against the Northeastern Huskies (2-6-0, 0-1-0). Sophomore Nane Joseph scored both goals off corner kicks in the first half of the match. On the defensive side Hermann Award list nominee David Horst, Yomby William and junior goalkeeper Evan Newton shutdown the the Huskies. It was Newton's fourth shutout on the season.
The Monarchs cashed in on their aggressive offense attack twice in the first frame. ODU forced 5 first half corner kicks, scoring off two of them. The first was a near perfect ball from A.J. Kulp that slipped through the goalkeeper's fingers and Nane Joseph was there to knock home the header. It was Joseph's first goal of the season and of his career.
He would not wait long for his second. In the 37th minute, Joseph would connect again from inside the box. The ball was played into the box and it was Trevor Banks who had the first crack at it, as his shot was deflected by the keeper. Joseph would follow immediately hammering the ball into the back of the net from about 6 yards out. The assist for Banks was his second on the year, adding to his team-leading point total now at six.
ODU returns to the Old Dominion Soccer Stadium Sunday as they host three-time defending CAA Champion Hofstra Pride at 1:00 pm.
