NORFOLK, Va. -- The Lady Monarchs (4-2-1, 1-0-0) saw their four-game unbeaten streak snapped Friday night as the Fightin' Blue Hens of the University of Delaware (5-3-0, 1-0-0) defeated ODU 1-3 in the CAA season opener. It was just the third home loss in the last 22 home games for ODU. Junior Elizabeth Brewster scored her fourth goal on the season for the Lady Monarchs in the loss.
The Lady Monarchs jumped to a quick lead in the 7th minute of play as Junior Shavon Knight dribbled into the corner and was given some space into the box. She then sent a cross to the goalie box where the ball was deflected into the air and Brewster got her head on it, sending it into the back of the goal. It was Knight's second assist on the season, running her team-leading points total to 12. Brewster's fourth goal on the season has her tied for second on the team in points with nine.
The Blue Hens would respond in the second half when they were awarded a penalty kick at the 34:12 mark after a Saratu Dodo tackle in the box. Redshirt sophomore Caitlyn Germain took the kick and guessed right to tie the score 1-1.
The score would stay knotted up into the locker room in a tight game all over the field. Both goalies had given up one goal and each had one save. Old Dominion had taken eight first half shots while Delaware had four.
In the second half, the game had a much more rapid pace, which lead to Delaware's game-winning goal. The game-winner came from freshman Amy Pickard (CAA Rookie of the Week), on an unassisted shot in the 66th minute. She received the ball in transition and took on two defenders.
ODU's defense was again near impregnable, allowing just seven shots all game and just three in the second half. Unfortunately, the Delaware offense was able to score on two of those three second half opportunities. The Lady Monarchs offense outshot Delaware 20-7, including seven on-goal.
Delaware was able to survive an onslaught of Lady Monarch opportunities in the final 15 minutes of play to hold on for the win. Leading the charge for ODU was Knight, who took seven shots. Senior Lisa McKenzie took six, including three on-goal.
Old Dominion returns to the field Sunday as they take on the Drexel Dragons (4-3-1, 0-1-0). Drexel is coming off a 0-3 loss to William & Mary. Kick-off is set for 1:00 pm.
