Field Hockey Shutout By Top-Ranked North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 13/13 Old Dominion field hockey team fell to the the top team in the nation according to the STX/NFHCA Poll on Friday night. In a rain delayed contest, the Lady Monarchs were defeated 3-0 by North Carolina.

The Tar Heels, ranked No. 2 in the Women's Field Hockey.Com Poll, remains undefeated, improving to 7-0 on the year. Old Dominion meanwhile falls to 1-5 overall, suffering their third straight loss.

Old Dominion was able to keep the Tar Heels scoreless in the first half, but in half number two, North Carolina was able to light up the scoreboard three times. The Tar Heels' Jesse Gay broke the 0-0 stalemate nearly two minutes into the second half off a rebound. Elizabeth Drazdowski added to the North Carolina lead with 12 and a half minutes remaining by connecting on a long pass and a minute and a half later was followed up by Danielle Forword's additional insurance goal on a shot from near the top of the circle.

The Lady Monarchs were outshot, 25-1. Sophomore Titia Beek (Heiloo, Holland) registered the lone Lady Monarch shot. Old Dominion was also outcornered, 11-1.

Junior Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) made a career-high 13 saves in goal for Old Dominion.

The Lady Monarch field hockey team returns to action on Sunday, September 16th when they travel to Durham, North Carolina to meet up with the No. 10/10 Duke Blue Devils. Game action begins at 1:00 p.m.
