NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion silver sailing team of sophomores Alan Alkins and Sonya Mendoza finished in fifth with a consistent weekend at the Riley Cup hosted by ODU. Alkins sailed to a top five finish in all but three races in the weekend while Mendoza never finished out of the top ten. Georgetown won the event as the Georgetown B division squad paced all teams by finishing with just 29 points through 12 races.
Alkins, sailing in A division, kicked the regatta off with a win and two top five finishes. The Monarchs silver team would hold the lead as Mendoza finished fourth, sixth, and fifth in the first three races to give the Monarchs just 22 points through 3 races in both divisions.
Alkins would falter with a disqualification and a 12th place finish but would finish with five straight fifth places to finish with 71 points. Mendoza had an extremely consistent regatta, finishing among the top ten in all 12 races. She finished a high of second place in the 8th race.
The ODU Blue team of junior Gillen Elder and freshman Kristen Cummings finished 9th at the Riley Cup Regatta. The freshman paced the team with one win and, like Mendoza, never finishing out of the top ten. She tallied 78 points in B division.
