NORFOLK, VA -- The Lady Monarchs won their third straight season opener on Sunday as they won 2-1 over the Loyola College Greyhounds (0-2). ODU's returning high goal scorer Shavon Knight(Waldorf, Md.) knocked home both goals, including a header into the upper right pocket for the game-winner. Janna Pearson, Saratu Dodo, and Ashley Kukura all had assists in the game.
Knight struck first in the game just 13:40 into the match. Newcomer Ashley Kukura (Virginia Beach, Va.) fed a through ball down the center of the field and the junior took a couple touches before burying it into the back of the net.
The Greyhounds would answer in the first half with an unassisted goal by junior midfielder Theresa Ferraina. She found a loose ball at the top of the box and fired a shot past ODU's Lauren Tupman in goal.
Tupman would not falter the rest of the way, however, as she only allowed the one goal and made four saves in the game.
With just under twenty minutes left to play, Old Dominion set up for a corner kick with junior forward Janna Pearson on the kick. The ball was center goal in the box when sophomore defender Saratu Dodo got a head on it toward the goal and Knight's second chance header found its way into the back of the net for the game-winner.
The junior led the way with two goals on four shots. She had three on-goal. Senior Lisa McKenzie also took four shots with one on-net.
ODU will take their 1-0 record on the road Friday as they face off against East Carolina University with kick-off set for 4:00 pm.
