NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion University's rising senior defenderDavid Horst (Pine Grove, PA.) was named the Premier Development League(PDL) Defender of the Year and is among the 29 collegiate players selectedto the NSCAA Hermann Trophy Watch List (Collegiate Soccer's top Player).
Horst helped lead ODU to a 14-6-2 record and the round of 16 in lastYear's NCAA College Cup. He was the CAA's Defender of the Year, and All-region selection. The 6-4, 205-pounder helped the Piranhas this summer to a 14-0-2 record,the only team to finish the PDL regular season unbeaten.Along the way the Piranhas set a PDL consecutive shutout record with ten.
The Hermann Trophy is selected by the National Soccer Coaches Association.In November, the list will be narrowed to 15 semifinalists. Three finalists will be namedIn early December in conjunction with the NCAA Division I College Cup and will beinvited to the Missouri Athletic Club on Jan. 11, 2008. The 2007 award will be announced during a nationally-televised news conference that evening. Last year'swinner was Joseph Lapira of Notre Dame.
Last week, fellow Monarch, goalkeeper Evan Newton was named the PDL's Goalkeeper of the year as he compiled a 0.222 goals against average. He was also named the PDL'sunder-19 Player of the Year.
