NORFOLK, VA-- The United Soccer Leagues named Evan Newton PDL Goalkeeper of the Year and defender David Horst to the All-League Defensivesquad. The two helped lead the Piranhas to a 14-0-2 regular season mark and a 10-game league record shutout streak.
Newton captured the goalkeeper of the year honor as voted on by the league's coaches and general managers in addition to winning the goalsagainst title for the league's lowest goals average of 0.222.
After opening the season by guiding the team to a league record 10-gameshutout streak, it was no surprise that Newton captured the league'slowest goals against average to earn the GAA Champion award. Newton allowed just three goals over the course of 14 matches. He recorded eight shutouts along the way. Newton, who earned CAA All-Rookie honors willbe a sophomore for the Monarchs.
David Horst, a rising senior and 2006 CAA Defender of the Year was one ofthe anchors of a back line that only allowed six goals on the season, playing every minute of the campaign as the Piranhas won the regular season title. Horst is a two-time All-League selection.
