RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL -- ODU sailor Katrina Williams finished in 8th place during a weather-shortened event at the 2007 Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro last week. The Laser Radial event was only able to complete 8 official races after which Williams was sitting in eighth place overall. Paige Railey, a sailor from the University of South Florida and United States representative, won the event with a low score of 25. Williams finished the event with a net score of 47 points.
Poor weather conditions prevented a complete event at the Pan-American games, shortening the event by two races. The medal race was held on Saturday, where Railey finished fourth to hold on for victory.
The rising sophomore at Old Dominion will sail again in the Canadian Olympic-training Regatta-Kingston (CORK) this August. She was 4th overall in the CORK Radial Female last summer and she placed 15th out of 60 sailors in the CORK Radial Gold. During her first year at Old Dominion, Williams qualified for both women's national championship, and finished 6th in the singlehanded national championship in the fall.
