Shawler Pitches Monarchs Over Georgia State, 5-2 In CAA Tournament Opener

WILMINGTON, NC--Old Dominion University sophomore Anthony Shawler (11-2) pitched a complete game to lead the top seeded Monarchs (34-22) to a 5-2 victoryover Georgia State in the first round of the CAA Baseball Championships. ODU will play UNCW Thursday at 3:30. UNCW lost to VCU, 4-3.

The Oscar Smith High School graduate tossed his CAA leading eighth completeGame with ten strikeouts and two walks. Shawler lowered his league leading ERA to 2.20. The 11 wins also leads the league.

In the fourth Jake McAloose led off with a walk and scored on Shawler's sacrificefly for a 1-0 lead. The Panthers tied it in the fifth as Eric Suttle singled home BradleyLogan.

In the fifth Chris Keenan reached on an error and scored on Jake McAloose'sDouble to give ODU a 2-0 lead. The Monarchs increased it in the seventh as DavidBurns singled home Mike Zahm with two outs, then Nick Erdman followed with a two-run homer for a 5-1 lead.

Georgia State scored an unearned run in the eighth as Charlie Pelt singled in Eric Suttle. David Burns led ODU with three hits and McAloose added two. The VCU-UNCGame is later tonight.
