NORFOLK, VA -- Top ranked St. Mary's College of Maryland is currently at the top of a tight leaderboard after one day of racing at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Women's National Championship sponsored by PENTAX and Vanguard. The Seahawks have a one point advantage on the defending national champion Cougars of the College of Charleston. Also close behind and racing well on the first day was the Naval Academy and the University of California - Irvine.

The first day offered an unusually shifty breeze on the Elizabeth River but clear skies and high temperatures made for excellent regatta conditions. Fighting the shifty breeze the best on the day was Charleston's B division skipper Allie Blecher with crew Christina Murray and Julia Southworth. The Cougars B division boat sailed among the top four in all six B division races winning twice. Blecher is out in front in B division with just 14 total points. Navy and Dartmouth are tied for second in B division with 31 points apiece.

In A division, the top skipper on the day was Adrienne Patterson of St. Mary's with 27 total points to include four top three finishes. The first place Seahawks sailed among the top ten in all twelve races held in both divisions on the first day.

St. Mary's is in the lead with 60 points, followed by the Charleston team with 61 points. With 71 points Navy is in third and UCI ends day one in fourth with 79 points. Rounding out the top five is Stanford with 81 points followed by Tufts with 88. Boston College with 96, Harvard with 106, Dartmouth at 107 and Wisconsin with 110 points fills out the top ten. Boston University and Georgetown nearly broke the top ten with 112 and 113 points respectively while William Smith (137), Old Dominion (143), Washington (158), South Florida (171), Michigan (178), and Texas (181) round out the competition after day one.

Action will continue off the coast of the ODU Sailing Center on campus Thursday at around 9:45 am.
