William and Mary Defeats ODU, 11-8

WILLIAMSBURG, VA-- William and Mary (29-25/13-16)rallied for a total of five runs in the seventh and eight innings, thenheld off the Monarchs for an 11-8 victory over Old Dominion (33-22/18-11) Saturday evening. Despite the loss, ODUwill be the top seed in next week's CAA tournament.

Delaware lost, VCU split a doubleheader with Northeastern and UNC Wilmington completed a three-game sweep of George Mason to all finishat 18-11 in the CAA. ODU owns the tie breaker over each.

William and Mary scored first as Greg Sexton, the nation's number two hitter singled home Paul Juliano with two outs in the third inning. In the fourth Ben Guez singled in Greg Maliniak, to make it 2-0.ODU rallied in the fifth with four infield hits. Mike Zahm, Jake McAloose, David Burnsand Anthony Shawler each knocked in runs to give ODU a 4-2 lead.

The Tribe came right back in the bottom of the fifth as Sexton and Tim Park singled home runs to tie the game at four.In the top of the sixth ODU's Mike Zahm hit his sixth homer of the season with Chris Keenan aboard to give the Monarchs back the lead at 6-4.

In the sixth inning and the bases loaded Tim Parks singled home two runs to tie the game at six. The Tribe took the lead in the seventh when Ben Guez doubled home pinchrunner Jeff Jones for a 7-6 Tribe lead. William and Mary added four more in the eighth highlighted by a Jeff Jones bases loaded double.

ODU scored two more runs in the ninth. With the bases loaded Tyler Belcher's fielder's choice plated David Burns and Nick Erdman scoredfrom third on a pass ball, but the Monarchs would leave the bases loaded.Zahm knocked in two runs and now has a team best 60 RBI. Anthony Shawler led ODU with three hits, while Jake McAloose added two.Keenan and Zahm both scored twice.

The six team CAA Championship begins Wednesday in Wilmington, NC., with ODU, Delaware, VCU, host UNCW, George Mason and Georgia State.
