ODU Splits Doubleheader With VCU

RICHMOND, VA--Old Dominion (23-14/11-4) split a doubleheader with Virginia Commonwealth (19-13/5-6) Sunday at the Diamond. VCU won game one,5-4 in 13 innings. ODU took the second game, 6-4 thanks to a homerun in the ninthby Mike Zahm (Omaha, NE). ODU wins the series and sits atop the CAA.

In the nightcap Mike Zahm hit a solo shot to lead off the ninth and giveODU a 5-4 lead. Jake McAloose (Va. Beach, Va.) and David Burns (Jacksonville, FL.) then get back to back singles with McAloose scoring from third on a wild pitch to give ODU a 6-4 lead.

Junior righthander Hunter Hall (Virginia Beach, VA.) picked up the win in relief as he fanned three of the four batters he faced. He is now 4-1. McAloose led ODU with four hits in the second game.

In the opener, Carlos Rodriguez singled home Eric Bolden with the basesLoaded in the bottom of the 13th to give VCU a 5-4 win. ODU took a 4-3 leadInto the tenth when Nick Erdman (Leola,PA.) singled home Jake McAloose, but the Rams rallied to when John Leonard hit a solo homer in the bottom of the tenth to keep the game going.

David Burns, Gerard Hall (Washington,DC.) and Jake McAloose each had two hits in the first game. Mick Mattaliano picked up the win for VCU.

McAloose hit .438 on the week with three runs scored, while Zahm hit.500 with seven RBI and six runs scored. The Monarchs returnto action on Wednesday when they host Maryland at 6 p.m.
