Dexter Carter Fans 12 To Lead ODU Over Maryland, 4-2

NORFOLK, VA--Sophomore righthander Dexter Carter (Murfreesboro, NC.) fanned a career high 12 batters to help lead Old Dominion (24-14) to a 4-2 victoryover Maryland (19-16) Wednesday night at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.

Carter scattered eight hits, walked only two for his first collegiate win. RossFetterly (Norfolk, Va.) pitched the ninth for his fourth save of the season.

Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, VA.) singled home Joe Velleggia (Monkton, MD.)to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead in the third. In the fourth, with Anthony Shawler(Chesapeake, VA. ) and Nick Erdman (Leola, PA.) aboard, Velleggia doubled them in. Freshman shortstop Gerard Hall (Washington, DC.) singled home Velleggia to complete ODU's scoring.

Maryland scored in the fifth and sixth innings. Mike Murphy singled home A.J.Casario in the fifth and Steve Braun doubled home designated hitter Gerry Spessard inthe sixth. Casario, Spessard and Dan Bennick led Maryland with two hits each whileErdman and Velleggia led ODU with two hits each.

ODU returns to CAA Play with a three-game series against Towson beginningFriday at 7 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
