Women's Tennis Defeats Georgia State, 6-1

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team upped its mark to 9-2 on the year with a 6-1 victory over CAA rival Georgia State.

Old Dominion took two of the three doubles matches for the first points of the afternoon. Charleen Haarhoff (Durban, South Africa) and Fernanda Luiz (Nova Lima, Brazil) teammed up for an 8-1 victory over Martina Nitkova and Kiera Strickland at No. 1 doubles. Barbara Costa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Daniella Cohen picked up the other Lady Monarch doubles win with an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles over Matieja Podgorsek and Smith.

The Lady Monarchs won all but one singles match. Of the five Lady Monarchs singles victories, four game by straight sets. At No. 6 singles, newcomer Daniela Cohen gave up just one set. She defeated Kiera Strickland by a 6-1, 6-0 scores.

Other straight set winner included Haarhoff as she picked up an 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles over Martina Nikova, Larissa Santos (Florianopolis, Brazil) edging out Rachel Malina No. 3 singles, 6-3, 7-5, and Jana Kubikova earning a 6-2, 7-6 win over Emma Stahl-Johansson at No. 4 singles.

The Lady Monarchs' Barbara Costa came from behind in her No. 5 singles apperanca. After trailing, 4-6, to Matieja Podgorsek, she rallied back with 6-1, 1-0 sets for the win.

The Lady Monarch women's tennis team will return to action on Thursday, March 8th against Evansville in Hilton Head, South Carolina
