Women's Basketball Closes Out Regular Season With 79-56 Victory At UNC-Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Senior Sherida Triggs (Norcross, Ga.) poured in a team and season-high 20 points as the Old Dominion women's basketball closed out the 2006-07 regular season by posting a 79-56 victory over UNC-Wilmington at Trask Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Monarchs improved to 21-8 overall and 17-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Old Dominion, which had clinched the top seed on Thursday in a win at Georgia State, will return to action at the CAA Women's Basketball Tournament at the Bob Carpenter Center on the campus of the University of Delaware. The top seeded Lady Monarchs will take on the winner of No. 8 Georgia State/No. 9 Drexel on Friday, March 9th at noon.

Against the Seahawks, Triggs narrowly missed a double-double as she hauled in nine rebounds. Junior Tay Ransburg (Kansas City, Mo.) was the other Lady Monarch in double figure with 12 points. Sophomore Jazzmin Walters (Norfolk, Va.) dished out five assists and moved into seventh all-time in the ODU sophomore assist leaders list this 94 total this season.

UNC-Wilmington was led by Sahsha Taylor with 16 points. Alex Stewart added in 12, while Greta Luksyte netted 11 in the loss.

The Seahawks captured the first bucket of the afternoon but that would be the only lead UNC-Wilmington would manage. Over the final 6:58 of the first half, the Seahawks were held without a field goals as Old Dominion outscored UNC-Wilmington 13-4. All four Seahawk points during the span came from the line. The Lady Monarchs enjoyed a 20-point, 37-17 halftime lead.

In the second half, Old Dominion led by as many as 23. UNC-Wilmington was only able to come within 17 points of the Lady Monarch lead in the second half. The Seahawks' Greta Luksyte used her own 6-0 run as the Lady Monarchs led 51-34 with 11:28 remaining in the game.

Ransburg, who scored all of her 12 points in the second half, returned a 20-point edge to the Lady Monarchs at the 8:35 mark with her first basketball of the afternoon as Old Dominion lead 60-40.

The Lady Monarchs captured 24 points off of 22 Seahawk turnovers while comitting a season-low seven of their own. Additionally, Old Dominion racked up 44 of their 79 points in the paint.
