NORFOLK,VA--The University of Richmond (14-10) defeated theOld Dominion (19-12) Tuesday evening 3-2 at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
The Spiders took a 3-0 lead with a run in the first as Joe White doubled home Benji Marshall who led off the game with a triple. In the third inning Joe Mahoney sacrifice fly plated Benji Marshall and Alex Wotring doubled home Hank Coogan.
ODU scored in the third when freshman catcher Joe Velleggia's (Monkton, MD. ) groundout scored Nick Erdman (Leola,PA.) from third. The Monarchs added a run in the eighth as Nick Erdman scored on Mike Zahm's (Omaha, NE.)infield hit.
Josh Horn picked up the win for Richmond going seven innings allowingjust two hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Brian Alas pitched the last two innings and picked up his sixth save. Sophomore Dexter Carter (Murfreesboro, NC.) was the losing pitcher, fanning seven with two walks in six innings of work.
Benji Marshall and Joe White led Richmond with two hits each, while MikeZahm, the CAA's third leading hitter (.421) collected two hits for ODU. The Monarchstravel to Boston, MA. for a three-game CAA series at Northeastern beginning Fridayat 2 p.m.
