PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Despite scoring three of the game's final four goals and getting hat tricks from senior Ashley Stanwick (Aquasco, Md.) and sophomore Jessica Noone (Manassass, Va.), the Old Dominion women's lacrosse team fell to No. 18 (IWLCA)/19 (Inside Lacrosse) Rutgers, 11-8, at the Rutgers Stadium Complex.
The loss drops the Lady Monarchs to 3-2 overall, while the Scarlet Knights upped their mark to 7-2 overall.
The Lady Monarchs got onto the scoreboard first with leading scorer Caroline Jacobs (Gaithersburg, Md.) finding the back of the Rutgers net.
Rutgers pulled out to a 3-1 lead over the game's next five minutes, but it wouldn't be long before Old Dominion would tie the game. Stanwick and Noone each captured their first goals of the afternoon within a minute and half of each other as the Lady Monarchs and Scarlet Knights were deadlocked at 3-3 with 20:41 left in the first half.
Rutgers' Katie Batiuk gave her team a 4-3 lead but back-to-back Lady Monarch goals gave Old Dominion the lead for the first time since the opening minutes of the game. Stanwick scored her second tally of the game at the 7:46 mark to tie it up at 4-4 and Ashley Kellogg (Downingtown, Pa.) gave the Lady Monarchs a 5-4 edge with 5:56. Old Dominion would hold that lead until the first half's final minute.
The Scarlet Knights, however, scored two goals in the first half's final minute to take a 5-2 advantage into halftime and proceeded to score six unanswered goals overall heading into the second half.
Down 10-5, the Lady Monarchs used a late rally and rattled off three consecutive goals to cut their deficit to 10-8. Noone started the scoring barrage with 5:29 left in the game and would go on to net her third tally of the game two minutes later. With 1:08 left in the game, Stanwick scored her third goal to pull the Lady Monarchs within two.
Rutgers however added in an insurance goal with less than a minute left to stop the late surge by Old Dominion.
The Scarlet Knights held the advantage in shots, groundballs, and draw controls. Rutgers outshot Old Dominion, 29-25, held a 16-14 advantage in groundballs, and outdrew the Lady Monarchs 11-9. Senior Katie Veneziale (Downingtown, Va.) and Lindsey Belle (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) each captured three groundballs in the loss for the Lady Monarchs. Noone led the way in caused turnovers with three.
In net, junior Sara Larson (Sylvan Lake, Mich.) recorded a career-high 12 saves.
Old Dominion returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Richmond.
