NORFOLK, VA--Junior righthander Ryan Bergh (Reddick, FL.) with reliefhelp from Ross Fetterly (Norfolk, Va.) tossed a five hit shutout to lead Old Dominion(19-11/7-2) to a 1-0 victory over UNC Wilmington (12-15/4-5) Sunday afternoonat the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. ODU sweeps the series from the defendingCAA champion Seahawks.
Bergh walked only one and struckout three for his third win of the year in seven-plus innings of work. Fetterly came on in the eighth inning with Rhett Miller on second and Jonathan Batts on first. Fetterly got Jess Snyder to pop up to get out of the inning. The Seahawks Jason Appel led the ninth off with a walk, but was left stranded on second.
The games lone run came in the third as Nick Erdman (Leola, PA.)led off with a walk. Gerard Hall (Washington, DC.) reached on an error to put runners on first and third. Chris Keenan's (Chesapeake, Va.) groundout Plated Erdman to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead they never relinquished.
Freshman righthander Daniel Cropper pitched seven innings for UNCW, allowing five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
Mike Zahm (Omaha, NE.)led ODU with two hits, while Jonathan Batts led UNCW with two hits. ODU hosts Richmond Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
