NORFOLK, VA--Sophomore righthander Chris Henderson scattered five hits tolead 30th ranked VMI (17-4) to a 3-1 victory over Old Dominion (16-11) Wednesday night at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. The win was VMI's first over ODU since1979, ending a 19-game losing streak to the Monarchs.
Henderson pitched 8.1 innings allowing only five hits, no walks and striking out three. After Jake MacAloose singled, Kevin Crum came on in the ninth to pick up his nation's leading 13th save, getting a double play to end the game.
ODU scored in the first inning as designated hitter David Burns (Jacksonville, FL.) singled home Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, VA.).
VMI scored a run in each of the first three innings. Robert Crumpler singled homeChad Rice in the first. Tanner Biagini singled home Michael Roberts in the second, andThomas Hayden singled home Crumpler in the third inning. Roberts led the Keydets withThree hits, while Crumpler had two hits.
Sophomore Dexter Carter (Murfreesboro, NC) pitched seven innings, giving up11 hits and striking out eight for the Monarchs who host defending CAA Champion UNC Wilmington in a three-game series beginning Friday night at 7 p.m. VMI travels to Winthrop for a three-game Big South series beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
