CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the 2007 season with a 18-4 setback at the hands of top-ranked North Carolina on Wednesday afternoon at Fetzer Field.
The Tar Heels outscored the Lady Monarchs, 9-0, in the second half on its way to its seventh consecutive victory and improvee to 7-0 with the victory. Old Dominion falls to 2-1.
The Lady Monarchs were led by senior Katie Veneziale (Downingtown, Pa.) for the second straight game. The fourth-year Lady Monarch yielded three of ODU's four goals. Sophomore Jessica Noone (Manassass, Va.) netted the Lady Monarchs' other goal.
Christina Juras led Carolina with two goals and two assists. Chrissy Rude scored three goals, while Erica LaGrow, Kristen Taylor and Jenn Russell all scored twice. Melissa McCarthy, Megan Bosica and Meg Freshwater had one goal and one assist for UNC.
The Tar Heels jumped out to a quick start, grabbing a 4-0 lead in the first nine minutes on two goals apiece by LaGrow and Russell. Noone and Veneziale would score back-to-back goals for the Lady Monarchs to cut the lead to 4-2 at the 19:11 mark. Carolina responded with three straight goals of its own to lead 7-2 at the 15:33 mark. Veneziale scored two more goals to cut the lead to 7-4 before the Tar Heels scored twice late to make it 9-4 at the break.
In the second half, the Tar Heels pulled away, going on a 9-0 scoring run in the period
Old Dominion was outshot 37-17 and North Carolina held a 25-14 advantage in groundballs. Senior Caroline Jacobs (Gaithersburg, Md.) scooped up six to lead the Lady Monarchs.
The Lady Monarchs did outdraw the Tar Heels, 13-11. Veneziale led the way with six.
Old Dominion continues its road swing by traveling to Temple on Saturday, March 24th and Rutgers on Monday, March 26th.
