NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team kicked off the 2007 season on a high note as they defeated American University, 14-6, on Sunday afternoon at Foreman Field.
Senior Caroline Jacobs (Gaithersburg, Md.) and junior Kelly Kimener (Oakton, Va.) captured five goals and an assist apiece in their 2007 debut. In all five different Lady Monarch found the back of the American pipes with senior Katie Venziale (Downingtown, Pa.) scoring twice and sophomore Jessica Noone (Manassas, Va.) and freshman Ashley Kellogg (Downingtown, Pa.) each capturing a score. Kellogg's goal, the first of her Lady Monarch career, at the 9:32 mark of the first half proved to be the game winner.
The Eagles were led by Jackie Lane's hattrick. Brittany Fnnegan added two goals in the loss while Caitlin Bell, Caithlin Gorman, and Anne Marie Person each added a tally as well.
Jacobs also led the way for the Lady Monarchs in groundballs, draw controls, and caused turnovers. The fourth year Lady Monarch scooped up a game-high four grounballs, caused a game-high three turnovers, and joined classmate Veneziale in registering four draw controls.
Kimener started off the season with her first goal just over three minutes into the game. However American responded within a minute on a Lane goal and went up 2-0 less than two minutes later. Jacobs tied the game at 2-2, but once again the Eagles responded with Anne Marie Person giving American a 3-2 lead with 17:46 left in the first half.
Almost 30 seconds later, Kimener gave Old Dominion the first of five unanswered goals as the Lady Monarchs took over the lead for good. In fact Old Dominion would score seven of the next eight goals to close the half. Kellogg would be the final tallier of the five goal run adding in the game-winner at the 9:32 mark.
The second half had Old Dominion outscoring American 5-2. The Eagles landed the ball in the Lady Monarch net with 20:41 remaining in the game and would not score until 30 seconds were left in the contest.
Junior Sara Larson made her first career start in Saturday's win making nine saves. Her counterpart, Kristine Vida stopped 17 Lady Monarch shots on goal.
Old Dominion outshot American, 37-20, held a slight advantage in the groundball category, 19-18, and won 14 draws as compared to the Eagles' eight.
