Baseball Monarchs Lose to Rutgers, 8-4

NORFOLK, VA -- Rutger's reliever Dennis Hall pitched 4 2/3 innings of one-hit baseball to shelve ODU's hopes at winning Saturday. The Monarchs (5-6) lost their fourth straight game Saturday against Rutgers University (4-1) by a final score of 8-4. Mike Zahm continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-3, one RBI day while Nick Erdman broke out of a slump with a 2-for-4, one run, one RBI day at the plate.

Ryan Bergh (Reddick, FL) was saddled with the loss (1-2) after pitching 7 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and striking out six. Bergh left the game with a one-run lead but with a runner on base in the eighth inning. David Wagner (Johnstown, PA) threw a wild pitch that allowed the runner to advance to third, and then gave up a single to center field that scored the go-ahead run. Hunter Hall (Virginia Beach, VA) gave up three runs in the ninth for the final score of 8-4.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Monarchs had three runs on three hits in the fourth inning to go ahead. They added the fourth and final run in the fifth inning on Nick Erdman's single to center field. Erdman, Zahm, and Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, VA) all had two hits for the Monarchs while David Burns (Jacksonville, FL) and Joe Vellegia (Monkton, MD) added one apiece.

The 1-2-3 hitters for the Scarlet Knights did most of the damage combining for 10 hits, four RBI's, and seven runs scored. Dennis Hill earned the win in relief with seven strikeouts and just one hit allowed in the final 4 2/3 innings of work.

The rubber match of the series is set for 1:00 pm Sunday.
