NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team upped its mark to 8-2 on the season after taking home two victories over the weekend. The Lady Monarchs topped Howard, 7-0, and defeated Winthrop, 5-2.
Against Howard, Old Dominion swept through the doubles competition and won all six singles matches in straight sets.
The Lady Monarch doubles teams gave up a total of three games, each winning by a score of 8-1. Charleen Haarhoff (Durban, South Africa) and Fernanda Luiz defeated Jasmine Smith and Laura Maria at No. 1 doubles, Larissa Santos (Florianopolis, Brazil) and Jana Kubickova downed Courtney Dorsey and Michelle Gee at No. 2 doubles, while Barbara Costa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Daniela Cohen earned a victory over Howard's Aja Wright and Henderson.
Singles action against the Bison, Fernada Luiz moved up to the top singles spot to earn a 6-0, 6-2 win over Aja Wright. At No. 2 singles, Larissa Santos earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Laura Maria. Jana Kubickova, playing at No. 3 singles, defeated Jasmine Smith, 6-3, 6-0. No. 4 singles saw Barbara Costa picked up a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Michelle Gee. Daniela Cohen played her way to a 6-1, 6-1 No. 5 singles win over Courtney Dorsey. At No. 6 singles, Linda Garder (Tallinn, Estonia) earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Whitney Ambush.
Against Winthrop, the Lady Monarchs took home all three doubles matches as well as four of the six singles matches for the win.
Doubles saw Haarhoff and Luiz team up at the No. 1 position for a 8-3 over Ana Paula Novaes and Antoniya Bagaric. Both the No. 2 and No. 3 ODU doubles teams won their matches by an 8-4 score. Larissa Santos and Jana Kubickova defeated Paula Pereira and Patrica Coimbra at No. 2 doubles, while Barbara Costa and Daniela Cohen defeated Yelina Fadina and Larisa Bekmetova at No. 3 doubles.
Old Dominion took the top four singles matches en-route to the win. No. 93 Charleen Haarhoff defeated Ana Paula Novaes, 6-1, 7-6 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles Fernanda Luiz edged out Antoniya Bagaric, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. Larissa Santos earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Yelina Fadina at No. 3 singles, while Jana Kubickova picked up a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Patrica Coimbra.
The Old Dominion women's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, March 3 against CAA rival Georgia State.
