NORFOLK, VA -- Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, VA) continued his hot start with a 3-for-6 game, scoring three runs and adding four runs batted in. The Monarchs also got three RBI's from David Burns as he smacked the first home run of the 2007 season for ODU, and from Mike Zahm on two run-scoring triples. ODU grabbed the 16-3 victory and improved to 2-0 while dropping Maryland-Eastern Shore to 0-2 on the season.
Starting pitcher Anthony Shawler (1-0) got the win going five innings with seven strikeouts. He pitched effectively allowing six hits and three earned runs. ODU platooned on the mound the rest of the way with Hunter Hall, Dexter Carter, David Wagner, and Brady Burchill each getting an inning of work.
At the plate, all but two starters had at least one RBI with the biggest swing coming from Burns. In the four-run sixth inning, the junior stepped up with one-runner on and slammed a belt-high offspeed pitch over the right field fence. It was the first of his Old Dominion career.
The Monarchs earned 12 walks and tallied 12 hits while the pitching staff comined for 11 strikeouts, giving up just one hit and three base runners after the fifth inning.
UMES was led by Joel Gonzales with a 3-for-4 day at the plate and two runs batted in. Mike Roberts (0-1) suffered the loss for the Hawks as he pitched four innings with two strikeouts, giving up seven runs on six hits.
Game three of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 pm.
