DURHAM, N.C. -- Taking on the first of six ranked opponents on its schedule Wednesday evening, the No. 54 Old Dominion men's tennis team fell, 5-2, to No. 7 Duke at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Monarchs' two points came from its ranked members in singles, sophomore Harel Srugo (Kibutz Gazit, Israel) and senior Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil).

It was the Monarchs first loss of the season as they fall to 1-1 overall. The Blue Devils playing in their dual meeting opener, go to 1-0.

Duke took a 1-0 lead following the doubles matches as the Blue Devils swept the Monarchs. The match started off with Duke earning a win at No. 2 doubles. Dylan Arnould and Peter Rodrigues defeated ODU's Eidy Igarashi (São José do Rio Preto, Brazil) and Alex Seleznev (Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic), 8-4. Both the No. 1 and No. 3 ODU doubles teams fell 8-6 in their matches. At No. 1 doubles, the duo of sixth-ranked Cancado and Srugo fell to fourth-ranked Joey Atas and David Goulet to clinch the point for the Blue Devils. At No. 3 doubles, Yakov Diskin (Yorktown, Va.) and Rodrigo Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) were edged out by Kiril Dimitrov and Ned Samuelson.

Duke took a 2-0 lead with a win at No. 5 singles. The Blue Devils' David Goulet defeated Yakov Diskin, 6-0, 6-1.

Old Dominion however broke the shutout as Harel Srugo racked up another ranked victory. The seventh-ranked Monarch downed No. 80 Peter Rodrigues in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

After Srugo's victory, Duke clinched the win by taking the next two matches. No. 100 Joey Atas defeated Eidy Igarashi, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Aaron Carpenter solidified the Blue Devil win with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Yakov Diskin at No. 6 singles.

Although Duke managed to pick up another win with a victory at the No. 4 spot, Alex Seleznev forced three sets with the Blue Devils' No. 84 Dylan Arnould. Falling behind, 6-4, in the first set, Seleznev rallied by blanking out Arnould, 6-0, in the second set. Arnould won the match with a 6-4 third set victory.

The Monarchs closed out the night with No. 18 Henrique Cancado earning a victory over a ranked foe. No. 18 Cancado earned a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win over No. 54 Kiril Dimitrov for the final point.

The Old Dominion men's tennis team returns to action on Sunday, February 4th, when it travels to No. 24 Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
