PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Old Dominion basketball team opened Sunday afternoon's game on an 11-0 run and never looked back as they won their seventh straight in an 83-51 victory over the Drexel Dragons at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Old Dominion swept the season series with the Dragons after taking the previous meeting back on January 7th, 70-45. The 83 points are the most netted by the Lady Monarchs this season and the team also collected a season-high 22 steals. Additionally, the Dragons turned the ball over 30 times for the second time against the Lady Monarchs this season which resulted in 46 Old Dominion points.
The win improves Old Dominion to 10-7 overall and 6-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Drexel meanwhile falls to 5-13 and winless in the CAA at 0-7.
Although it took three minutes for a team to score, the outcome was never in doubt as Old Dominion rattled off 11 unanswered points to start the game. The Dragons were held to only six field goals in the opening half and didn't manage to score until the 14:58 mark. The Lady Monarchs held as much as a 21-point lead late in the half en-route to a 37-18 advantage. It was the fourth time this year Old Dominion has held an opponent to under 20 at the half and the third time against an opponent from the CAA.
Drexel never got closer than 16 in the second half. After Old Dominion established a 25-point, 51-26 lead, the Dragons went on a 9-0 to cut it to 16. Dragon leading scorer Gabriela Marginean capped the run hitting one of two free throws as Drexel trailed, 51-35, with 12:11 remaining.
From there, Old Dominion took a run of its own. The Lady Monarchs rattled off 11 straight points to bump its lead to 31 points. Junior Tay Ransburg (Kansas City, Mo.) kicked off the run collecting seven points during the spurt and was capped by freshman Jessica Canady (Williamsburg, Va.) putting the ball up and in for a 66-35 ODU edge with 9:06 left.Sophomore Jazzmin Walters (Norfolk, Va.) dropped in two free throws two and a half minutes later to put Old Dominion ahead by at least 30 the rest of the way.
Three Lady Monarchs were in double figures led by junior T.J. Jordan (Portsmouth, Va.) with 18 points. Senior Tish Lyons (Newport News, Va.) poured in 13 from off the bench, while Ransburg dropped in 12. Senior Sherida Triggs (Norcross, Ga.) led Old Dominion on the boards with seven.
Drexel's Gabriela Marginean led her team with 15 points and seven rebounds. Narissa Suber added in 14 points while comitting nine turnovers.
The Lady Monarchs return home next week. They host Virginia Commonwealth on Thursday, January 25th at 7:00 p.m. and William & Mary on Sunday, January 28th at 2:00 p.m.
