WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team picked up five of six singles wins over UMBC and the doubles team of sophomore Charleen Haarhoff (Durban, South Africa) and junior Fernanda Luiz (Nova Lima, Brazil) earned a win over William & Mary's Megan Moutlon-Levy and Joy Adewumi at Day Two fo the William & Mary Spring Kick-Off on Sunday.
No. 93 Haarhoff, playing in Flight A-1 singles, won her second match of the kick-off with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Retrievers' Alice Chen. In Flight A-2 singles, Luiz picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory over UMBC's Joy Adewumi.
Also earning wins in singles were newcomers Jana Kubicikova and Daniela Cohen along with junior Barbara Costa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil). Kubickikova played to a 6-2, 6-4 win at Fight B-2 singles against UMBC's Cornelia Carapcea. In Flight C-1 singles, Cost won 6-3, 6-1 over Adrina Fonseca. In Flight C-2 singles, Cohen defeated the Retrievers' Elizabeth Anderson, 6-4, 6-2.
Old Dominion's senior Larissa Santos (Florianopolis, Brazil) fell in her Flight B-1 appearance against UMBC falling 6-4, 6-3 to Pascaline Cette.
In the two doubles matches of the day, the Lady Monarchs spilt contests with host William & Mary. Haarhoff and Luiz defeated Moulton-Levy and Acharya by a score of 802 in Flight A. In Flight B, Kubickova and Santos were edged out by Jelena Zoricic and Magdelena Bresson, 8-5.
The Lady Monarch women's tennis team returns to action at the VCU 4-1 Invitational taking place next Saturday and Sunday, January 16-17. Old Dominion will take on James Madison, George Mason, Longwood, and Richmond.
