Lady Monarchs Reach .500 With 75-54 Victory Over Georgia State

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's basketball team improved to .500 on the season with its fourth straight win, a 75-54 victory over a visiting Georgia State squad on Thursday evening at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

The Lady Monarchs improve to 7-7 overall and 3-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), while the Lady Panthers fell to 9-6 overall and 1-3 in the CAA.

Old Dominion held a 34-16 advantage marking the lowest scoring output by a Lady Monarch opponent this season. The 18 point ODU halftime lead also tied the Lady Monarchs largest halftime lead this year. Old Dominion also held an 18-point, 35-17 advantage over Chicago State in head coach Wendy Larry's 500th career victory over Chicago State back on December 9th. Additionally, the Lady Panthers tied its season low for scoring in a half with its 16 points. Georgia State also had 16 at Georgia Tech and against Tennessee-Martin.

Georiga State only held the lead once with Brittany Hollins scoring on the opening bucket. From there, the Lady Monarch raced out on a 10-0 run and never looked back. Lady Panther leading scorer and Preseason Second Team All-CAA selection Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen hit one of two free throw attempts at the 12:11 mark to trail ODU 13-7, but Georgia State would not get any closer. From there Georgia State was held scoreless for nearly four minutes as junior Shahida Williams (Newark, N.J.) rattled off the first five points of a 8-0 Lady Monarch run. The Old Dominion defense helped hold Georgia State to just seven field goals as they went 7-of-30 from the field in the opening half shooting only 23.3 percent.

The second half saw Old Dominion expand its lead as a many as 25. Lady Monarch three-point specialist T.J. Jordan (Portsmouth, Va.), who only connected on two shots from downtown, hit her second and final three to give Old Dominion a 67-42 lead with 6:38 left.

Three Lady Monarchs reached double digits in the victory led by senior Sherida Triggs (Norcross, Ga.) with 16. Williams poured in 15 while senior Tish Lyons (Newport News, Va.) added in 10 from off the bench.

Sophomore Jazzmin Walters (Norfolk, Va.) dished out eight assists and registered four steals, tying career highs in both categories.

Old Dominion outrebounded Georgia State, 47-31. Although junior Tamara Ransburg (Kansas City, Mo.) also notched two points, she hauled in a game-high nine boards.

Georgia State's Roegiers-Jensen led her squad with 19 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Hollins poured in 14 points with four assists and four steals.

The Lady Monarchs managed to collect 31 points off of 25 Lady Panther miscues and outscored the Georgia State bench, 32-6.

Old Dominion returns to action on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. when they host Hofstra on ODU mascot Big Blue's Birthday.
