BLACKSBURG, VA--Monarch newcomer Zachary Kinney (Portland, TX.)scored with less than six minutes remaining to lift the Monarchs to a 1-0exhibition win over Virginia Tech Sunday morning. ODU is pre-seasonranked 23rd by the coaches NSCAA/adidas poll and 20th by College SoccerNews.
The match was rescheduled to Sunday due to the bad weather anda power outage in Blacksburg Saturday night.
After a scoreless first half the Monarchs would break the stalematein the 85th minute when Kinney, a junior headed a Jared Kent (Marietta,GA.) cross into the right side of the net from outside the six-yard box.
Freshman goalkeeper Evan Newton (Virginia Beach, VA) had threesaves on the day. Sean Sigrist (Wauwatosa, WI.), another freshman played the final 15 minutes in goal. ODU outshot the Hokies, 14-10 on the day.
ODU opens the regular season Friday night at home when they hostDefending national champion and pre-season number one Maryland at 6:30 p.m.
