Season Opener:
The Monarchs of Old Dominion finally hit the mat for the first time in 2006-07 as they head to Indianapolis, Indiana to face off against Purdue. Old Dominion is 0-1 against Purdue with the only meeting between the two teams coming in 2003.
Nationally Ranked:
Christian Staylor was ranked 18th in the pre-season polls for the 125-pound weight class. Staylor is the only nationally ranked Monarch but ODU has an immensely growing program including the number eight-ranked (W.I.N. Magazine) recruiting class.
Jump Right In:
The Monarchs are going to tested early by a very good Purdue wrestling team. Two Boilermakers are ranked nationally in junior Dan Bedoy (165) and senior Nathan Moore (197). Bedoy is ranked 16th in the InterMat/NWCA pre-season rankings and Moore is ranked 9th among the 197 weight class.
Monarchs Nick Pullano and David Mendoza will be charged with wrestling these two national contenders. Pullano does not shy away from big names as he defeated nationally ranked Keydet Chris Hardy two years ago. Mendoza was a member of the All-CAA Freshman team last year and will be looking to start with a huge win over Moore this Friday.
