CHARLESTON, SC -- The Monarch sailing team raced in 14 heats over the weekend at the College of Charleston in South Carolina and never finished out of the top 10. With 18 of the best sailing teams on the east coast in attendance neither the A division nor B division boats finished worse than 10th in any one heat. The Monarchs raced to a fifth place finish with four freshmen on deck.

In the Monarchs A division boat, U.S. Olympian Kyle Rogachenko skippered fellow freshman Laura Speas. The pair won the first heat of the weekend and added a second place finish on Sunday.

Two more freshman were on board the B division boats in Wilson Stout and Jillian Martin. Stout and Martin finished fifth in B division just five points out of second. The tight 2-3-4-5 finish between College of Charlesston, the Cougars, Washington College and ODU might have had a different result had the weather cooperated. Unfortunately, both divisions were only able to complete 7 races on the weekend.

Stout and Martin finished as high as second and were in the top six in five of the seven heats. It was newcomer Martin's first career appearance and she should prove a valuable asset for the team in the spring.

ODU's fall season comes to a close with a great deal of anticipation for success in the spring including what should be a very exciting team racing season for the Monarchs.
