CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's basketball team opened the 2006-07 season with a 92-72 loss at in-state rival Virginia on Sunday afternoon at the brand new John Paul Jones Arena.
The game marked the opening of the Cavaliers brand new facility. Virginia had helped open ODU's new home, the Ted Constant Convocation Center, back when the door opened in 2002.
The loss dropped Old Dominion to 0-1 in their first showing of the regular season. Virginia improved to 2-0.
Virginia jumped out to a 14-point lead, 24-10. The Cavaliers built its lead to 21 points, 36-15 with 6:38 to go in the half and entered the locker room with a 14-point edge, 44-30, paced by senior Siedah Williams' 15 points.
In the second half, Virginia maintained its double-digit lead, going ahead by as many as 21 points.
Junior guard T.J. Jordan (Portsmouth, Va.) led the Lady Monarch squad with 21 points, all coming from three-point range. The third-year Lady Monarch shot 6-of-19 from the field, including 6-of-17 from three-point range setting new career-highs in field goals and three-pointers attempted.
Senior Sherida Triggs (Norcross, Ga.) sat out most of the first half in foul trouble and scored all 15 of her points in the second half.
Redshirt sophomore Tiffany Green (Chesapeake, Va.) collected a game-high 10 boards as Virginia only held a slight one rebound margin over Old Dominion, 43-42.
Sophomore Lyndra Littles led Virginia with a career-high 23 points and 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and seventh of her career. She went 13-of-14 from the line. Williams followed with 21 points. Junior Denesha Kenion came off the bench for a career-high 13 points, while freshman Monica Wright rounded out the double-figure scoring with 11 points. The frosh also added six boards, four assists, and three steals in her second start.
The Lady Monarchs return to action on Saturday, November 18th when they host No. 15/16 Kentucky on Homecomming. Tip-off is at 4:00 p.m. and the game will be televised by Comcast Sportsnet (Mid-Atlantic). The Wildcats are one of four teams ranked in the Top 25 in the preseason polls the Lady Monarchs will face this season.
