Lady Monarch Basketball Reaches Century Mark In Exhibition Showing Against Team Concept

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's basketball team reached the century mark in exhibition action on Wednesday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center as the Lady Monarchs topped Team Concept, 102-61.

The Lady Monarchs had five in double figure led by sophomore forward Tiffany Green (Chesapeake, Va.) with 15 point on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor and a 3-of-4 effort from the line.

Junior Tay Ransburg (Kansas City, Mo.) captured a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Also joining Green and Ransburg in double figures were Preseason Second Team All-CAA honoree Sherida Triggs (Norcross, Ga.) and junior forward Shahida Williams (Newark, N.J.) each with 13. Williams shot 6-of-7 from the field and nearly was the second Lady Monarch with a double-double on the night with nine boards.

Senior Tish Lyons (Newport News, Va.) was the other Lady Monarch in double digits collecting 12 points and dishing out four assists.

Team Concept, a roster comprised of former college student-athletes, was led by Tamara Moore from Wisconsin with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Former Virginia star Telisha Quarles had 10 points in the loss.

The Lady Monarchs led almost the entire game only allowing Team Concept to hold the lead briefly midway through the first half. With the score tied at 18-18 at the 10:47 mark, Ransburg hit a jumper to ignite a 15-5 run to give Old Dominion a double figure lead. Team Concept managed to close the gap to single digits on occasion over the final eight minutes of the first half, but would get no closer than six points. Williams netted a bucket with 30 seconds left in the game to give Old Dominion a double figure lead for good and the Lady Monarchs entered the half with a 12-point, 46-34 advantage.

The lead continued to grow for the Lady Monarchs in half number two. Midway through the second half, Old Dominion held a 20-point lead, 69-49, and only saw it grow even further. Old Dominion outscored Team Concept, 33-10, over the game's final 10:37 for the 102-61 final.

Old Dominion ended the night shooting 50.6 percent (40-for-79) from the floor and 79.2 percent (19-of-24) from the free throw line. Team Concept was held to just 35.2 (25-of-71) shooting. The Lady Monarchs also dominated the glass outrebounding Team Concept, 62-29.

The Lady Monarchs, a team predicted to pick up its 16th straight CAA title, ranked 18th in the Street & Smith Preseason Poll, and receiving votes in the Preseason WBCA/ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, still have one more exhibition showing before the 2006-07 regular season kicks off. Old Dominion will host M.I. Express on Tuesday, November 7th. Tip-off is 7:00 p.m. at the Constant Center.
