VIRGINIA BEACH, VA-- The Lady Monarchs (16-4-1)and 11th ranked William and Mary (16-1-3) battled to a 1-1 tie, but the ODU advances to its first ever CAA Final, besting the Tribe, 6-5 on penalty kicks. ODU will play sixth seeded James Madison (10-8-2)Saturday at 4:00 for the title.
Senior Heather Jones made the deciding penalty kick for the LadyMonarchs after ODU's keeper Laura Tupman (Virginia Beach, Va.) blocked Brittany Bode's shot.
William and Mary ranked 11th nationally jumped out in front six minutes into the match when Donna Mataya got a pass from Claire Zimmeck for the score. Later in the period ODU's leading scorer Katie Watson missed on penalty kick with a chance to tie the match.
In the second half the Lady Monarchs tied the match 57 minutes into thehalf as Watson got a pass from senior Heather Vaughan in the box. It wasthe All-CAA forwards 13 goal of the season.
The two teams battled to two scoreless overtime sessions. They then wentto penalty kicks to decide who would advance to the finals on Saturday.
ODU's keeper Tupman made three saves on the night while Meghan Walkerof William and Mary had five.
ODU and JMU played on Oct.8 with the Lady Monarchs winning, 2-1 in Norfolk.
