NORFOLK, Va.- Sophomore forward Denise Admiraal (Heiloo, Holland) posted a hat trick to lead the third-ranked Lady Monarchs to a 7-0 win over Towson in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action on Foreman Field on Sunday.
The win, Old Dominion's eighth straight, improves the Lady Monarchs to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in the CAA as they posted their fourth straight shutout and sixth overall. The Tigers meanwhile fall to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Sophomore forward Nicolien van Nispen (Bilthoven, Holland) added two goals to the shutout. Seniors Dana Sensenig (Denver, Pa.) and Caroline Nichols (Va. Beach, Va.) both added one goal.
The Lady Monarchs scored three quick goals in the beginning of the first half to bring Old Dominion to an early lead. Van Nispen collected her second straight game-winner putting away her first goal of the afternoon 6:50 into the match. From there, the Lady Monarchs tacked on two more goals in the next six minutes. Admiraal captured the first of her three goals as her shot bounced off a Towson defender into the net at the 10 minutes mark, followed by van Nispen's second goal of the day less than two mintues later. The Lady Monarchs tacked on another goal with four minutes left in the half by leading scorer Sensenig with an assist from freshman Kathleen Shea (Elizaville, N.Y.), her first of her career.
Old Dominion came out strong the second half tacking on three more goals to its lead with an early tally and two late penalty corner goals. Admiraal picked up goal number two a mere four minutes into the half and then earned her seventh goal of the season off a penalty corner. After receiving the stick stop, van Nispen faked and passed the ball over to Admriaal. Nichols registered ODU's final goal of the afternoon also on a penalty corner. Sophomore Katelyn Smither (Suffolk, Va.) and Sensenig were credited with the assist.
Towson midfielder Laura Schnell tallied the Tiger's single shot attempt of the afternoon's match. Senior goalkeeper Christina Armer had fourteen saves in the loss and Gabby Mink posted a defensive save. ODU netminder Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) stopped the lone Tiger shot on net.
Old Dominion outshot the Tigers a total of 27-1 and did not allow Towson a single penalty corner opportunity, while the Lady Monarchs had 12.
The Lady Monarchs return to action in their final road trip of the regular season before returning home to close the regular season with six straight home matches.
