NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion University senior forward Edson Elcock (Brooklyn, NY.) scored two goals to lead the Monarchs to a 3-0 victory over Loyola(MD.) in the first day of the 31st annual Stihl Soccer Classic. ODU ranks 13th byCollege Soccer News and 20th by the coaches NSCAA/adidas.William and Mary defeated#29 UNC Greensboro in the other match-up, 5-1.
Eight minutes in the match sophomore Trevor Banks (Madison, WI.) lofted a shot over Loyola's goalkeeper for the Monarchs first goal. At the 34:16 mark Edson Elcock broke up a pass and punched one in, then 16 seconds later he got the rebound off a shot he took and scored again to make it 3-0.
ODU outshot Loyola, 15-3 as freshman keeper Evan Newton (Virginia Beach, VA.) picked up his third straight shutout. ODU will meet UNC Greensboro on Sunday at2:30.
In the earlier game, fellow CAA member William and Mary got two goals eachfrom Pat Scherder and Andrew Hoxie to defeat UNC Greensboro, 5-1. The Tribe tooka 2-0 halftime lead after Scherder scosred from an assist by Doug Ernst. Scherder then assisted Hoxie who headed one in to make it 2-0. Scherder then scored on an unassistedgoal early in the second half and Doug Ernst made it 4-0 on an assist from Brock Jones.Two-time Southern Conference Player of the Year Randi Patterson put the Spartans onthe board with 18 minutes left, but Hoxie on an assist from Thomas Jarrett gave theTribe its final goal to make it 5-1. UNCG outshot the Tribe, 16-15. Kris Rake hadfour saves for William and Mary.
William and Mary will play Loyola Sunday at 12 noon.
