ELON, NC--Zachary Kinney's (Portland, TX.) goal ten minutes into the second half lifted Old Dominion to a 1-0 victory over Elon Wednesday afternoon. The Monarchs, ranked 18th nationally by COLLEGE SOCCER NEWS won their third straight while handing the Phoenix (4-1) their first loss of the season. It is also the first timeElon has been shutout this season as they came into the match averaging over three goals per game. ODU's lone loss this year is to top rankedMaryland.

After a scoreless first half, senior Edson Elcock (Brooklyn, NY.) fed Kinney who pushed his shot past the Elon keeper Taylor Saxe for the goal. It is Kinney's second goal of the season. Freshman goalkeeper Evan Newton (Virginia Beach, Va.) had seven saves and picked up his second straight shutout.

ODU returns to action on Sept. 15 and 17 to host the ODU-Stihl Soccer Classic which will included UNC Greensboro, ranked 17th by COLLEGE SOCCER NEWS and 22nd by SOCCER AMERICA, Loyola (Md.), and CAA rival William and Mary. ODU will play Loyola on Friday at 7:00 p.m. with the Tribe taking on UNCG at 4:30 p.m. OnSunday, Sept. 17, William and Mary will meet Loyola at 12 noon followed by the ODU-UNCG match at 2:30 p.m.. UNCG is coached by Michael Parker who was Alan Dawson's collegiate head coach at Lock Haven. The Spartans also return two-time Southern Conference Player of the Year and Hermann Award semi-finalist Randi Patterson.
