KINGSTON, RI--Freshman forward Ambane Emmanuel (Yaounde Cameroon) scored with 1:30 left in regulation, to give the Monarchs (1-1) a 4-3 victory over Harvard in the first round of the University of Rhode Island tournament Friday evening. It wasEmmanuel's second goal of the match.
ODU went up, 3-0 as senior Zachary Kinney (Portland, TX.) scored when he reeled in a long pass from A.J. Kulp (Ephrata, PA.) on the left side and sent a right-footed flick shot past Harvards' goalkeeper. At the 29:56 mark Edson Elcock (Broklyn, NY.) gave the Monarchs a 2-0 hafltime lead on an assist from Jared Kent (Marietta, GA.).
Emanuel put ODU up 3-0 ten minutes into the second half on an assist from RossMackenzie (Richmond, VA.), then the Crimson made a rally, scoring three goals in a span of 6:16 to tie the match on a goal by Andre Alpan. Alpan scored Harvard's firstgoal and assisted Charles Altchek with their second.
ODU outshot Harvard, 20-12 as freshman goalkeeper Evan Newton (Virginia Beach, VA) had three saves. ODU ranks 20th by College Soccer News, 22nd by Soccer America and 23rd by Soccer Times and the coaches NSCAA/adidas. The Monarchs take on host Rhode Island, the defending Atlantic 10 Champions Sunday at 2:30.
