TOWSON, MD--Hans Falkenhan's two-run homer capped a four-run rallyin the sixth inning as the Towson Tigers (19-33/7-21) defeated Old Dominion (38-14/20-8) Thursday afternoon. ODU's loss along with JMU's 14-4 loss to UNC Wilmington leaves both teams tied for first in the CAA.
Towson took the lead in the fourth as Ryan Schreiter singled home AdamHeffron. ODU came back in the fifth with three runs Dana Arrowood doubled and with two outs Patrick Nichols slammed his 16th homerun of the season. Justin Gregula then followed with a solo shot to give the Monarchs a 3-1 lead.
In the sixth Gary Helmick led off with a triple for Towson, Jason Stifler walked and Matt Collins doubled them home to tie the game at three. Falkenhan then homered to rightcenter to give the Tigers the lead.
Relief pitcher Steve Johnson came in and shut the Monarchs down the last three innings for the save. Losing pitcher Kevin Gunter fanned ten on the day for ODU. This is the Monarchs first three-game losing streak of the season.
Mike Zahm led ODU with two hits on the day. Eight of ODU's line-up hadatleast one hit. The Monarchs left 11 runners on base, including six in the first three innings. Game two of the series is Friday at 3 p.m.
