NORFOLK, VA -- The Norfolk Tides (NY Mets AAA affiliate) defeated theMonarchs, 3-1 Tuesday evening in the annual Wextrust Capital BaseballScholarship Classic at Harbor Park before a crowd of 1,541.
ODU scored in the fifth inning as Bryan Cipolla reached on an error,Justin Gregula was hit with a pitch and Tyler Belcher loaded the baseswith an infield single. Keith Hahn hit into a double play, scoring Cipolla.
Belcher, Keith Hahn and Mike Zahm each had hits for ODU. Hahn stole abase as well. The Tides catcher Joe Hietpas had the other hit for ODU.
The Tides scored in the third as Cory Aldridge singled home Ray Navarrete.In the fourth Chase Lambin came home on an error and Todd Self scoredin Chris Basak's single.
The Tides pitchers threw for both teams. Proceeds from the event benefitthe Intercollegiate foundation for Baseball scholarships. The series beganin 1980 and the Tides lead 13-2-1.
ODU returns to the CAA battles when they travel to Hempstead, NY totake on Hofstra in a three-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
